Ljubljana, Slovenia

I was inspired by a youtube video I saw a few months ago where a guy was doing the same dorky dance in around 50 different countries. I decided that I wanted to do something like this as well. After discussing it with Kelly, we came to the conclusion that this yoga pose we saw together when we were in Canada in December would be a great pose for me. The first time we caught it on camera was on our road trip home from Canada in Dec 09, when we stopped somewhere on the west coast to see the Pacific up close. Ljubljana was the first city in Europe where I captured this pose and there will be more to come....

Tuesday July 6th, 8:02 a.m. Jamie and I began our travels through Europe. We were given two weeks off to travel and we planned to see several different cities and countries. Our first destination was Bled, Slovenia then onto Ljubljana which is about 40 minutes by train. We had to travel 4 hours to the south east of Austria then about another hour by train to get to Bled. This is supposed to be a picturesque town with a great lake and castle along with great hiking. However, when we arrived there was a ridiculous thunderstorm with lightning and pouring rain. So we got off and then looked at each other and decided to get on the next train we could to Ljubljana so we could at least drop our stuff off at our hostel. An hour and a half later and wet clothes and hair later, we arrived at our hostel. The receptionist took a very long time to check us in, but luckily when she was done, it was clear blue skies and about 70 degrees. It was great weather to walk around and explore!!

We walked up to the castle so we could get a good view of the city. The strange part of the castle is that it was half old and half totally modern. So there would be concrete parts from the original structure and then steel and glass mixed in. Totally weird. This is us at the top of the lookout tower.

After the castle and many pictures and scary steep staircases later, we went into the city. We saw lots and lots of signs stating that this city was the Book Capital of the Europe or the World, I forget. But then we started to notice a book store on every block. We tried to find some books to buy, but did not find the ones by the authors we really wanted. We would be successful in Prague :)

We saw some weird art like this sculpture on this new bridge over the river. First of all, we saw a sign that the glass and metal bridge we were walking on cost several million dollars. it was kind of trippy to walk on and Jamie did not feel comfortable over the totally see through glass squares, either did I. Then to put these weird sculptures on the bridge did not make any sense to us. This one sculpture in particular was of a human body, but the spine and ribcage we switched. So the spine was in the front and the ribs in back...and the whole thing had no head. Weird. We then continued on walking around taking pictures and making fun of people until the World Cup quarterfinal game. Almost every cafe or restaurant had a flat screen to view the game on. We found what seemed to be the coolest one in the center square to sit at. We had a drink and watched the first half. It got a little chilly while we were watching so we went back to our hostel to get more clothes and then found another smaller cafe to watch the second half. It was a fun day filled with lots of people watching, jokes and pictures. We left the next morning at 7 to head through Austria to Vienna then to Prague.
